Remembering

I lie in this chair, beside your bed
In this beautiful but sterile room.
My thoughts return to that first time
We lay together in love:

In the silence of that night I lay
Listening to your breath,
I in tears
Of love and joy and bliss.
You turned to me
You touched my cheek
And whispered,
Sleep, my love.

I leave that chair
To lie with you
Just one last time,
In the silence of the night,
Listening to your breath,
I in tears
Of love and sorrow and loss.
I turn to you
And touch your cheek
And whisper,
Sleep, my love.

Dear Marie, how could I have missed this heartfelt poem of yours? Equally,, how on earth has it been read so many times and not commented upon? In these three stanzas you have said it all, and I know that every word could be wrung out for tears. Your loss is so palpable. Blessings and love, Allen.
