A bit of a rant really.
While discussing it, TV presenter asks about children playing football... Gaming critic says: well, not everyone can make the grade...
Make the Grade? What in heaven's name is she waffling about? Make what grade? Do people not do things just for fun any more? I am quite certain that when the lads (and one or two girls) were playing football on the green, when I was young, they were out for fun, not 'making the grade'. I know I never thought about'making The grade' when I played cricket with my brother at No Man's Land.
Most children will NEVER 'make the grade' in the modern sense. Most will be ordinary, not famous, not brilliant inventors, TV personalities, beautiful models, artists... but they will have people who love them, to whom they are the whole world, they will have families they will care for, work hard at what they can do, provide for those they love, respect others, be caring individuals, and, first and foremost, hopefully, be happy at what they do and what they are.
Television and the media are creating unrealistic expectations of life and creating unhappy, dissatisfied children and adults. No wonder, then, that mental illness is on the increase, and even children in primary school are presenting with mental health issues.
