The Actor

The problem when you play so many parts
is that the parts become a part of you,
and as you keep collecting all those parts
you gradually get lost in them,
and finally you are so many characters
that your own character is lost.
Your only hope to hang on to reality
is to keep playing all those roles,
to stick to them and cling to them,
as without them you are without a character.
Like a clown you become that mask
that you just have to wear,
since that is what defines you;
and don’t bother, just forget yourself
and all about it, since you anyway must die
and all your character must vanish anyway
while you will only be remembered
for all those conceited other characters
that you successfully made so alive;
and if they will survive you,
you succeeded as an actor.

I really like the defeatist tone of it all. The poem, I mean. And I loved the repetition of the words like part, always, and etc that you peppered throughout the verse. It felt like I was reading someone's mind crack.
