Turn down the empty glass can have two meanings; one being at sea the turning of the hour glass to mark each watch hour; the other is to turn down one's glass, to show that the drinking has now ended.

Another Shore

From the waters of my mother’s womb,
I was sent out to breast that foam.
Cast adrift I began then seeking
that other ocean, that other shore,
which my ambition was to travel far,
to that mystic land that’s always fair.

The Great Shipwright formed me
on stocks from which he launched me,
fresh upon the salty amniotic waters,
The Captain my father then came for me
to fit me out for a life at sea and now
I find his ship still resides inside me.

The tide goes out and the tide goes in
yet still I cannot reach that other shore,
so who will be my pilot and my guide?
While I continue to voyage from year to
year, until the storm has passed and I
might then turn down the empty glass.

I'm with Allen. This is a well-crafted poem, Dougie.

An enigmatic approach to telling the story of One's life. Clearly a lot of thought went into this poem in order to keep the thread nautical. :) I hope you are nowhere near turning down that glass my friend. Blessings, Allen
