The product of a fusion between a poem from my ex and my feelings after we broke up.....written June 8th 2005

Broken

Your insight,
Far and deep
Your eyes,
Clear and sweet,
Your passion,
Lost or taken,
Your flame,
Hidden or stolen,
The dreams we had,
Shattered and broken,
Rose and stem,
I thought we were,
One now fallen,
The other forgotten.

If believing is free,
Then free am I not,
For I believed freely,
But freedom bound me,
It cast chains so heavy,
I could not break through,
The burden of believing,
Broke me in two.

What was told as truth,
Bore no semblence to it,
Lies upon lies,
Half -truths meant to deceive,
The speaker, wretched,
The receiver, wept.
It was a gamble,
A charade of sorts.
A fake smile here,
A shallow word there;
Anything to please,
And make me believe
That what we had
Was certainly real.

One chose to awake,
The other too afraid,
One chose to die,
The other held on to life.
One chose truth,
The other hid from it.
One knew it had ended,
The other did too,
But one was strong,
Whilst the other, weak.

Truth one knew,
Would set them free,
But truth, to the other,
Would make him guilty,
Would make him a liar,
-This they knew,
This he feared,
- This she accepted,
Not as a gift,
Rather something taken,
For he never offered it,
Cowardice prevented him.

And now rivers will flow,
A heart full of sorrow,
Pain too much to bear,
Sadness and anger,
Bitterness fills the cup,
Overflows and never stops.

Like a leaf in the wind,
One will drift away,
Having no purpose,
Caring no longer,
Going wherever,
The swells will take her.
