The patient
No one deserved it less than you,
the bravest heart of women,
working hard for others all your life,
then suddenly struck by supreme unfairness,
reduced by hospitalization
to a patient subject to increasing crisis –
still, your courage is unbroken,
suddenly you are aware of where you are,
the crisis has imported some orientation,
and you are determined more than ever
never to give up.
So triumphs life in constant humiliation
over all that tries in vain to subject her;
stupidity, adversity, attacks, suppression
are just phantoms of a nightmare,
just illusions of a wind more thin than air
that starts you up in anger with imagined challenges
compelling you to shift to higher gear
just to show off to life that you are worthy of it
and that no one and no force or crisis
can in any way reduce it for you,
only make it grander.
