The Loner
Spare me the relationships of men,
of base humiliations and barbaric ignorance,
of common ignobility and vulgar shallowness,
and leave me to associate with purity instead,
with the profundity of peace and beauty,
with progressive studies in continuous expansion
and the freedom of my mind without disturbances,
with music without noise and poetry with meaning,
literature craving concentration and no superficial entertainment,
art and culture and all human things ennobling human minds,
and spare me all the nonsense of perdition and mortality.
The only good thing I can find in close relationships
is love and friendship when it lasts
so that you can depend on it throughout your life.
All other human business is a waste of time,
and life is far too precious to be wasted on nonentities.
