Never try the same weapon again, if once it has backfired.

Backfire

Love is not love if you suffer from it;
if it hurts you and gives you pain it is not love
but an abortion, a mistake, abuse or accident,
and it will only become worse it you don't leave at once,
forgetting all about it. If you struggle on
and waste your faith on what has fallen,
trying to believe it will recover, giving it a second chance,
and then a third, a fourth, and so on
leading only to increased self-torture,
self-destruction, wounds that constantly go deeper,
hurting more the more you keep supporting it,
then that will be the end of your integrity,
your peace of mind, your harmony and health,
your good sleep and the order of your life.
Your only chance is keeping your love straight
and in constructive order, or it simply will not work,
and nothing, not the highest effort of the greatest expertise
can make love work if once it has been violated.

I like this poem as a romantic expression, much like "Love means never having to say you're sorry." But it was a wise old man, happily married for many years and father of many children, who said instead, "Love means having to say you're sorry over and over again." Similarly, I would consider the opening line closer to the truth if it said, "Love is not love if you never suffer from it."

i have been in this place, experienced this misery. you are so right. too long i tried to make it work when there was nothing with which to work. it frustrates, it penetrates, it annihilates the soul trying to make something from nothing. well said Christian.
