In Lancashire, the River Douglas flows from the foot of Rivington Pike to meander into the Irish Sea at Hesketh Bank. In its later stage, the river has the ancient local name of Asland. It is rumoured that King Arthur defeated the Saxons here.
comes
and
asland
goes
beneath
the wild
and weary
snows
that scour
the fens
at winter
on levee
high
we touch
the sky
and deep
within
your body
moist we
point the
way that
is the
most
fulfilling
sign that
thee and
thine are
me and
mine
and we
are one
forever
asland
comes
and
asland
goes
beneath
the light
and starry
sky of
heaven
asland
comes
and
asland
goes
you kiss
me deep
thee deep
and
deep
the deep
we tremble
asland
comes
and
asland
goes
you wave
to me
and me
to thee
to part
again
no
never
