Written, after radiotherapy, in the grounds of St. Luke's Hospital (Dublin) which cares for those affected by cancer in the most human of ways.

silent spring

as a leaf
late lingering
let loose
by swift March winds
silence
falls

silence falls
within these old
and care worn walls
beneath the budding
chestnut trees
upon the violets
daffodils and leaves
silence
falls

silence falls
and
as I sit
upon a wooden bench
crafted by hands
for such as me
my eyes rise
to the pine tree tops
as on the bank
beside me
a badger set
is seen
silence
falls

silence falls
as children play
and men do smoke their lives away
one by one
or coupled be
I sit beneath
these burgeoning trees
as silence
comes
silence goes
for whom
we yet
not know

Kathy Lockhart
such sadness yet such strength, between each line. The repetition of the "silence falls" really is effective in portraying the
since of deep reflection and too the certainty of death to us all. Life goes on around death and death encircles life. One cannot be had without the other.
And to you I offer up prayers for your healing.
Take Care,
Kathy
