A beautiful Medieval Church dwarfed by the City but infinitely more beautiful.

St. Vedast-alias-Foster (London)

silent church
redolent with spirit
between
the Great Fire
and
the Blitz
only you stand
as I sit
in the side pews
light
two candles
for us
and then
by the sanctuary wall
beneath a small Icon
of Our Lady
I dream
in prayer
of those I love
those unloved
those unlived
in the Babylon
outside
'twixt Barbican
and
Threadneedle Street.

Thats what I love about cities sometimes, you find these oasis of peace - they stand still and true - although not much of a church goer these days, sometimes when I'm away its just nice to find somewhere peaceful to sit and contemplate, this brought that to mind
