A happy, peace-filled, loving and creative New Year to all.

a second longer

this year
they said on the news
that 2008 would be a second longer
I wonder if anyone told the Man in the Moon
or Venus bejewelled beside him
majestic in pitch black eons
of space and time

inside by the turf fire
as we await a new year
that is already old to others
I think of hearthsides past
when those no longer here
were there
it brings not sadness to me
but the fellowship of past joys
and present memory

out in the garden as the sirens blare
in the new year
trepidation runs through me
as my mum used to say
like someone walking over my grave
who knows
but I know
we know
the world can be better

let us make it shine
as Venus
in a bristling December night
of frost
and a January morning
of hope

Well said in your usual brilliant way Peter. Wish I was there beside your turf fire. There lies truth. My neighbours are letting off fireworks, they must have spent a fortune. There are huge dead rockets lying on my patio.
The noise was so bad at 11pm that my mum (for whom I care, and who has Alzheimer's disease,) thought she was back in the blitz. I went to my neighbours and very politely told them the problem. I asked them to take their fireworks to the field at the end of the road. They practically told me to f--- off.
I am in despair with the modern world. I had a terrible half hour wth my mum who was desperate and distressed. She is asleep now, I gave her double drugs. War heroes? She was one.
