Fryslân (Friesland): Day Seven
so it is
so it was
before long
the coastline
of Ireland
would be in sight
the ferries home
passing
fast and slow
thousands
of feet
below
will I miss Friesland
yes
but in a year
I may return
not just because of
Vestdijk
or my mythical longings
but
to see the coots
full grown
to walk the sea wall
as if to the islands
to see if the cats
are any fatter
to watch
the gathering storms
over the Waddenzee
and the lightning flashing
across a glowering sky
O yes and the rain
vertical
unrelenting
rain
but then
the warmth
the steamy heat
that sends you
home to sleep
naked and watch
crows and pigeons
command the red tiled
roof tops
as the town below
chatters away
and out on the polders
herons fish
and turpen towers
ring out the angelus
yes
I may be back
for sure
