An observation in a coffee house in Heerlen (Limburg).

in blue

suddenly
not sure why
I looked up
from my desultory plate
to see disharmony
in blue

three sisters
perhaps three enemies
making polite conversation
whilst looking
at the wall
the floor,
the watch
but never
each other
the fourth
in green
sought
escape routes

she looked at me
in despair
startled
like a heifer
outside the slaughterhouse
knowing what comes next
unable to change history
she would be blued
in time

This is an interesting poem, Peter. The "green" (meaning young?) woman in the process of being turned blue, like her miserable older sisters. I hope that your coffee lacked their bitterness.

Ghost of Heino
I read your poem, but you present a photograph. Lingering. Great write!

I agree with countryfog's comment - I think you have to be an observer - it is to notice the finer detail which you always do, be it people or places or just atmosphere

countryfog
As I've gotten older, and spend more time in places but alone, I've come to look at people, often alone too, differently, knowing each has a story, trying to guess what it is from their expression and body language, learning to listen to what their silence and solitude say. Of your lady in green you've come to something that seems much more than a guess, an insight and perhaps a little empathy that reveals why you are as fine a writer (and observer) as you are.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this. It reminds me of an artist's sketch. Great use of colour!
