"Many a night I saw the Pleiads, rising thro' the mellow shade, Glitter like a swarm of fireflies tangled in a silver braid.” Alfred Tennyson, Locksley Hall

Pleiades

seven sisters of the sun
how I love you
one
by one
by one ...

daughters of Atlas
and
the beautiful Pleoine

I stand in awe
beneath thy misty glow
and though
our world
is harsh and wan
I wonder when
your time
began
as one

a flock of doves
to sail across
the night sky

you were there
before our time began
my life the slightest speck
within your flight

I bow as celt and aztec
maori did before
and count
the grains of wonder
in your hair

Pleiades
O Pleiades
ye sisters of the sun
be with us
to
our ending

This is also one of my favorites of your work.

Not being a classicist, (is that the right word?) I'm not too sure what your poem specifies. Am I correct in thinking that it is a star or constellation? Whatever, it's clearly a tribute to some natural beauty, and your poem was beautiful as always. You have a rare gift.

PS: "Locksley Hall," along with the 60-year-later reprise, are huge faves of mine.

I was at a remote lakeside cabin in Ontario last summer when I first turned a pair of binoculars on this funny smudge in the night sky... DAZZLING!
And what a lovely tribute this is!
