Tree Climbing
The sun washed over the world.Wrapped in Cotton Wool, that was how he felt.
Warm and safe. Below him the fish swam about in their tiny pond, minding their own business.
On the other side of the pond he watched her, intently watching the fish. Suddenly, she looked
up, back at him, her eyes sparkling and a mischevious, excited grin on her face.
"Shall we go and climb trees?" She asked him.
"Sure we can"
They left his garden, his miniature paradise. She marching ahead and him strolling behind.
It was only a couple of paces away that he began to feel the sinking feel in his stomach.
The unsureness of reality. He kept his mind focused on her. Red hair, athletic figure.
Shining like the sun personified.
After passing a field they both reached a small copse dotted with thick, tall trees.
He liked this place, it was wild and hidden. He did not mind her eyes on him but liked no other.
Subconsciously he took the lead and led her deeper until no passer-bys could see them.
No time was spared and she began to climb. He watched from beneath. Her flexibility amazed him.
Deftly she twisted and turned. Her powerful legs took her high.
She looked back towards him.
"Are you coming?"
"No, I can't climb this tree, I'm nowhere near flexible enough"
She climbed back down, just as easy as she had climbed up.
"Let's find you a tree" She said to him.
She took his hand. Hers felt soft and slender, and gently pulled him deeper amongst the greenland.
He tried to climb, but none would hold his weight.
He looked around for something larger and saw a tree taller than the others, mightier and prouder, wiser and older
than all the others.
"How about that one?" He said.
She ran towards it, and began to climb, just as easy as before. The suns rays broke through the tree and through them
her lithe limbs and body moved. She glowed ethereal. Halfway up she climbed before looking up.
She called down to him.
"Can you climb?"
"I can't, the branches are too high, I can't get my leg up, there's just no way"
"How about if I pull you up?"
He paused for a moment, and looked down at himself, feeling like a plump mushroom, a disease or infection just waiting to take over this
beautiful tree whilst she clung to it like some delicate blossom or flower.
"No, thankyou, I'm too heavy. I would pull you down"
"Aww, I feel sorry for you, stuck down there" She replied
He couldn't respond, there was nothing to say, he looked down at the dirt.
she began to climb again. When he looked back up he could no longer see her.
The world began to darken. The rays of the sun retreated. He thought clouds had invaded the sky but looking up saw something else.
The shadows of people, hundreds, maybe thousands of them. All sat on branches and played on leaves bigger than houses and their silhouettes
shone through the green.
He could not hear them, or see them clearly. He could no longer see her. He moved away from the tree and looked around at his level.
The birds chirped, two foxes nearby watched him. A Badger crossed his path and paid him no heed.
He sighed and headed for home. He would climb no trees today.
